Mobile Devices

The following applies only to faculty and staff email accounts.  Read student email FAQs here.


In order to access your Penn email from a mobile device, GSE IT must first enable your account for mobile access. Please contact us and request that mobile syncing be enabled for your account before attempting to configure your email. You will then have to sign the Mobile Syncing Agreement online. Once mobile syncing has been enabled, your device will be required to have a passcode lock.

Android Devices

Android devices differ in their native email applications and therefore some devices might not have the same configuration as indicated in the instructions and some may not be able to connect to the email server at all, therefore limited support is available for Android devices.  With that disclaimer, the University does provide some generic setup instructions at the page below:

iPhone & iPad Email Configuration for Exchange Account Users

  1. Tap Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Add Account > Microsoft Exchange.
  2. Account Information:
    • Email: username@gse.upenn.edu
    • Domain: kite
    • Username: username
    • Password: Your email password
    • Description: Enter a meaningful account description (eg. GSE)
    • Tap Next

You should see a message that states "Verifying Exchange account information"

If the device is unable to connect to the server, a Server box appears. If this happens, enter mail.exchange.upenn.edu and tap Next.

You should now be able to connect, and be prompted with the following message: "Would you like to sync calendars and contacts for this account? This will erase all calendars and contacts". Tap Sync.     

Note: Only 3 days of email is synchronized. To synchronize more, tap Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > your Exchange account > Mail days to sync.

iPhone & iPad Email Configuration for Zimbra Account Users

  1. Tap Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Add Account > Microsoft Exchange.
  2. Account Information: 
    • Email: username@gse.upenn.edu
    • Domain: (do not fill in - leave blank)
    • Username: username
    • Password: Your email password
    • Description: Enter a meaningful account description (eg. GSE)
    • Tap Next

You should see a message that states "Verifying Exchange account information"

If the device is unable to connect to the server, a Server box appears. If this happens, enter mailbox.zimbra.upenn.edu and tap Next.

You should now be able to connect, and be prompted with the following message: "Would you like to sync calendars and contacts for this account? This will erase all calendars and contacts". Tap Sync.

Windows Phone 7 Email Configuration for Exchange Account Users

  1. Settings > Advanced Setup
  2. Account Information:
  3. Click Next. At the Advanced Setup screen:
    • Select Exchange ActiveSync
    • Domain: Kite
    • Server: mail.exchange.upenn.edu
    • Select Server requires encrypted (SSL) connection
    • Account Name: Enter a meaningful account description (eg. GSE)
  4. If your phone does not yet have a PIN applied, the New password needed dialog will appear. Select Set and enter a new passcode of at least 4 digits.

Windows Phone 7 Email Configuration for Zimbra Account Users

  1. Settings > Advanced Setup
  2. Account Information:
  3. Click Next. At the Advanced Setup screen:
    • Select Exchange ActiveSync
    • Domain: zimbra.upenn.edu
    • Server: mailbox.zimbra.upenn.edu
    • Select Server requires encrypted (SSL) connection
    • Account Name: Enter a meaningful account description (eg. GSE)
  4. If your phone does not yet have a PIN applied, a passcode for unlock should be applied manually. Select one of at least 4 digits.
